ボタニー湾

ボタニー湾（Botany Bay）は、ニューサウスウェールズ州、シドニー CBD 南に位置する湾。
ジェイムズ・クックがエンデバー号で最初に上陸した場所である。
クックは当初、赤エイが捕れた為に”スティングレイ・ベイ”, Stingray Bay と呼んでいた (下記参照；1)。
ジョセフ・バンクスと、ダニエル・ソランダーにより、ボタニー湾は植物が豊かな土地であることが発見され、ボタニー湾（Botany Bay植物の湾）と命名された(下記参照；2)。　
1788年1月19日、アーサー・フィリップは流刑植民地をこの地に設立。
水が豊富なこともあり、19世紀に人口が増加した。
1. "Captain Cook”s Journal During the First Voyage Round the World", editor W. J. L. Wharton”s footnote to 6 May 1770records "The great quantity of these sort of fish found in this place occasioned my giving it the name of Stingrays Harbour".
